"In this circle object I have combined different materials in a very elaborate process. The printed translucent fabric in blue tones comes from the digital print cycle "keine malerei". It covers one half of the circle and embodies the sea, the ocean. On the other half, various sands mixed with epoxy resin are applied in wavy lines. They represent the beach. Together, water and earth form a single entity. The light inside creates the illusion of iridescent sea surface and sunny warm sand.
It wasn't until I was creating the object that I suddenly recognized similarities with the ocean drum, a musical instrument that can create soothing ocean sounds. Many small steel balls roll over the skin and - depending on the strength of the movement - make a gentle or powerful ocean sound.
Unilluminated in daylight, the object radiates a formal coolness. Only when illuminated in the darkness does the work unfold its radiance and warmth. Special effects are also given by the dimmability of the light."
